The Treasury Committee has opened a call for evidence to help it decide whether to legislate to require businesses to accept physical cash. It is asking for views generally, but particularly on issues such as:
- are there groups in society that disproportionately rely on having cash accepted?
- should there be parts of the economy that should always have to accept cash?
- what are the challenges and costs of being required to be able to accept cash for all businesses, and specifically for financial services firms?
The call comes ahead of public sessions that may start later this year. Evidence can be submitted until 2 December.
